They don't fly, they don't rock 'n' roll during Mass, and they're not into habits. This sister act, however, has entertained audiences for more than 30 years with its groo-vin' mix of jazz and pop music. The all-nun Remnants, an outgrowth of a 1940s dance band at St.
Marys College, took to the stage in the late 1960s after nuns were permitted to wear street clothes and perform in public. But make no mistake, the band's eight Roman Catholic sisters, most of whom are from the Sisters of Charity community in Leavenworth, are serious musicians. They often play more than one instrument and improvise the music. They've also made two records. "Four of the sisters have been music teachers," said the group's manager and tenor saxophonist, Sister Mary Lenore Martin.

Sister Madeleva Ditmars leads the group and arranges such numbers as Alley Cat, Hello Dolly and Stardust to fit the Remnants' funky mix of marimba, piano, trumpet, rhythm guitar, trombone, tenor sax, cornet and vocals. Sister Ditmars has used a wheelchair the past five years because of rheumatoid arthritis.
But plastic knuckles in both hands don't stop her from pounding a lively rhythm on the drums or belting out a trumpet solo of When the Saints Go Marching In. "Sister Dominique Long is also in bad health, but by the second song, she's really going," Sister Ditmars said of the group's longtime piano player, also a Sister of Charity in Spokane, Wash. Sisters Martin, Ditmars and Long, all in their early 70s, are the only active charter members of the Remnants, which traces its roots to a dance band Sister Ditmars formed in 1942.
